What Is Lime White?

Liming White is a special timber floor treatment that gives wood a soft, whitewashed appearance while still showing the natural grain. Unlike traditional limewash (used on brick or plaster), our Liming White finish is a translucent wood stain and sealer. It uses a professional, white-pigmented stain (often combined with a clear polyurethane) that penetrates the timber. One coat produces a pale milky tone, and multiple coats build up opacity. When applied to correctly prepared timber, the Liming White finish lightly tints the wood with a milky-white tone while allowing the grain structure, knots, and natural variations to remain visible. The result is a balanced finish that brightens the floor without fully concealing the underlying timber. The final appearance can be adjusted by the number of coats applied and the type of timber used. One coat generally produces a subtle whitewash effect, while additional coats build a more pronounced, opaque finish. To ensure durability in residential and commercial settings, the stain is typically sealed with a professional-grade clear coating such as water-based polyurethane, which helps protect the surface from wear while maintaining a low-sheen, modern aesthetic.
Liming White is commonly used in interior design styles such as Scandinavian, coastal, and contemporary minimalist spaces, where a light, natural, and airy flooring finish is desired. It is suitable for a range of timber species, particularly open-grain hardwoods like oak and ash and is often selected for both floor restoration projects and new timber installations.

Benefits of Lime White Floors

Liming White floors are ideal for bright, modern interiors. The white-tinted finish reflects light and makes rooms feel larger and more inviting. It also highlights the wood grain and texture with a subtle milky hue, giving a sophisticated coastal or Scandinavian style. Modern liming products are durable and easy to maintain – their light color hides minor dust and imperfections, so floors often look clean longer.
  • Reflects natural light, brightening the space.
  • Enhances and preserves the timber’s grain and warmth.
  • Creates a trendy coastal/Hamptons or Scandi aesthetic.
  • Durable satin/matte finish that resists wear.
  • Easy upkeep: light color conceals wear; simple sweeping/mopping keeps it fresh.
🏠 Brightens Interior Spaces Naturally
Liming White finishes help reflect both natural and artificial light, making rooms feel brighter, cleaner, and more open. This is especially beneficial for smaller spaces or homes with limited sunlight, as the pale tone enhances overall spatial perception.
🏠 Enhances Natural Timber Character
Unlike solid paint finishes, Liming White is a translucent stain that allows the natural wood grain to remain visible. This preserves the organic texture and warmth of timber while adding a soft whitewashed overlay that elevates its visual appeal.
🏠 Achieves a Modern, High-End Aesthetic
This finish is widely used in contemporary interior design styles such as Scandinavian, coastal, and Hamptons-inspired homes. It creates a clean, understated luxury look that complements a wide range of interior colour palettes and furnishings.
🏠 Provides a Durable, Sealed Surface
When properly applied and sealed with professional-grade polyurethane or compatible protective coatings, Liming White floors offer strong resistance to daily wear, scuffing, and light abrasion. This makes them suitable for residential living areas and light commercial spaces.
🏠 Helps Mask Minor Dust and Imperfections
The soft white tone naturally diffuses the appearance of dust, footprints, and minor surface imperfections. This can help floors maintain a cleaner visual appearance between regular maintenance, particularly in high-traffic areas.
🏠 Versatile Across Multiple Timber Types
Liming White can be applied to a variety of timber species, particularly open-grain woods like oak and ash. It adapts well to different flooring styles, making it a flexible choice for both new installations and floor restorations.

Our Liming White Process

At Doncaster Floors, we use a proven multi-step method to achieve perfect Liming White floors:
  • Preparation & Sanding: We thoroughly inspect and sand the floor to bare wood, ensuring an even, clean surface. All old finishes, stains, or varnishes are removed so the liming product can bond properly.
  • Optional Bleaching: For very dark or red-toned timbers, a wood bleach can neutralize color and tannins. This is only needed in special cases; most Australian hardwoods take the liming stain directly after sanding.
  • Applying Liming White Stain: We apply one or more coats of a premium Liming White floor finish (e.g., Feast Watson Liming White, Rubio Monocoat Nordic White). This pigmented stain is applied evenly across the timber. Each coat is allowed to dry fully; typically 1 coat gives a gentle whitewash and 2–3 coats achieve a pronounced milky white.
  • Sealing: We finish with a clear, water-based polyurethane (satin or matte) to seal and protect the floor. (High-quality liming stains often incorporate their own protective polymers, but we always ensure the floor is fully sealed.)
  • Final Polishing: After curing, the floor is lightly buffed so the finish is uniformly smooth and satiny.

FAQ

Is Liming White the same as Lime Wash?
Not exactly. Traditional liming or lime wash uses a slaked lime paste for a chalky whitewash. Our Liming White service uses modern translucent white stains (oil or water-based) designed for timber. The result is cleaner, more controllable, and more durable on wood.
How many coats of Liming White are needed?
Typically 2–3 coats of liming white stain. One coat gives a subtle pale effect; additional coats deepen the whiteness. We adjust the number of coats based on your wood type and desired color.
How do I maintain Liming White floors?
Just like any sealed timber floor. Sweep or vacuum regularly and mop occasionally with a suitable timber floor cleaner. The light finish helps hide dust and minor scratches. Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasives. Over the years, you may recoat the clear sealer if needed.
Can this finish be used on any timber?
Yes. Liming White works best on open-grain woods (oak, ash, spotted gum, etc.) where the grain adds character. It can also lighten darker floors once sanded. We always recommend a test patch first to ensure you love the look.
Why not just paint the floor white?
Painting covers the grain and can chip easily. Liming White is a semi-transparent stain that lets the wood’s natural grain show through. When sealed with real flooring polyurethane, it offers much better durability and a more authentic timber look.
Do you do an onsite colour sample before starting?
Absolutely, and we strongly recommend it. We prepare colour test patches on your actual floor before any full application begins. This gives you total confidence in the finish before we proceed.
